Elevators FAQ

When choosing a home elevator there are often many elevators FAQ that you want answered. Many manufacturers offer answers to questions about their specific products but often general questions go answered. Here is a list of the most frequently asked elevators FAQ.

  • How expensive are home elevators? – Home elevators in general are not terribly expensive but there are a few different things that go in to determining the overall cost. You can generally find basic models for around $10,000 or less or more luxurious models for well over $50,000. The size, model, manufacturer and specific features that you choose all influence the overall cost.
  • Is there a difference between Home and Commercial Elevators? – There is a big difference between residential and commercial elevators but the differences are normally things such as size and weight capacity. Most elevators all work basically the same and many residential elevators are set up just like commercial elevators. There are different code requirements for safety and operation. Your manufacturer should be able to shed more light on the specific code requirements for home elevators.
  • Can I have an elevator installed in an existing home? – While it is much easier and often less expensive to have an elevator installed in a home that is still in construction, you can have a residential elevator installed in your home after it is built. You will need to contact a contractor to inquire about the cost of making your home ready for the elevator to be installed. Different elevator types have different space requirements so be sure to check to see what models you have the available space to accommodate.
  • Will a residential elevator increase my home's value? – The answer here is a resounding yes. Residential elevators can increase the overall value of your home by as much as ten percent which is an excellent ratio if you ever consider selling your home or need to obtain a home equity loan.
  • What is the weight capacity for residential elevators? – This depends on the specific model and size of elevator that you have installed. On average, most residential elevators can safely carry anywhere from 750 to 900 pounds or more.
  • What specific elevator do I need? – This depends on your specific situation. If you are planning to add an elevator for luxury purposes then your choices are many. If you need an elevator due to a disability or immobility issues then a simple or basic model will suffice. You can speak to different manufacturers or visit their websites to get a better overview of which models will best suit your specific needs.
  • Who installs the elevator? – Depending on where you live there may be certain restrictions that allow only licensed professionals to install residential elevators. Most companies that sell home elevators also install them. If you are unsure then you should check with the manufacturer or contact a licensed and certified contractor in your area to inquire about installation.

Choosing a residential elevator can often seem very confusing. Use these elevators FAQ to help you to better understand how to select the right elevator for your home and to ensure that you get the specific elevator that you need.
